Milled logs (logs that have been shaped on a lathe or a planer) make up the biggest section of the modern log home building movement. This is due to the fact that the mills and producers that manufacture these products can create huge numbers of them in a much shorter time (often several hundred home “kits” per year) than a handcraft log home producer (who may produce 1 to 12 homes per year). What they are producing and furnishing to consumers, however, has no comparison to a handcrafted log home package.

The conception is that milled log homes are much cheaper to build than a handcrafted home, thus affordable to a broader spectrum of customers. If you are planning to have your log home professionally built, this conception is not true. If you plan to hands-on build your own home, start to finish, the concept does have merit. Build a milled log home only for the reason that you prefer that style (not based on cost).

Basically, milled logs kits are for owner builders. This is the area where large cost savings can take place. Remove the labor factor from your project. But you are, in turn, adding a huge (HUGE) time commitment. Most folks have a hard time comparing a three man building crew working 40 hours each per week for six months to themselves working weekends and evenings. Milled logs are generally small (8” diameter or less) and short (14’ long and under). They can be handled by two or three people without special equipment.

We can help you purchase a milled log kit type home if that is your desire. See our KITS page and our OUR SERVICES page.
