The term “log Home Kit” may be the most confusing issue of
all in determining how to build your log home. There is no
industry standard for the term “Kit”. In the milled log arena a
“Kit” usually refers to what the specific producer is going to
furnish you. It may be logs for walls only, or include roof
structure logs or other building items needed to complete the
project. No kit will include EVERYTHING you need to build your
log home. Secondly, kits may come as “Random Length” kits or as
“Pre-Cut” kits. Random length kits should be much cheaper, but
will require much more labor to construct on site. Besides
“Pre-cut” or Random length”, cost for a kit will vary radically
depending on what items are or are not supplied and how far they
must all be shipped.
There is no such thing as an
“apples to apples” comparison of milled log home kits. Not only
do the lists of included items vary, but the quality of those
items also runs a gauntlet. We can assist you in interpreting
their quotes and putting together the best kit for you according
to your experience, finances and romantic desire. Handcrafted
packages may be easier to interpret as they usually are for logs
only along with on-site instruction for a one or two day
erection process. With both milled and handcrafted log homes, quality is of the essence. The cheapest log home kit to buy probably will not be the cheapest log home to build and maintain over time. Be aware (particularly in these days of soaring fuel costs) that shipping distances will have a significant influence on the delivered price of your kit or package. The term “going green” is coming to be relative to “buying local”. |
Handcrafted log homes are generally considered “Packages” rather
than “Kits”. This may be due in part to handcrafters desire to
separate themselves from the “Kit” industry. In reality the
“Package” or the “Kit” reference to the same thing: the
materials furnished by the producer to construct your log home.
